Why 500 to 550 pages?
A bound volume has a practical thickness limit, and a fat book is uncomfortable to use.

Pages means printed sides; front-and-back printing halves the sheets. Thicker books are split into volumes, which also means a damaged volume costs only its own reprint.

How does it know where the chapters are?
First from the PDF bookmarks, which most books and exported documents carry. When there are none it looks for headings such as Chapter 7, Unit 3, Lesson 2 or a large title on a nearly empty page. Every chapter it finds is listed with its page range, and you can untick anything that is not a real chapter.
Will a chapter ever be cut in half?
No, unless you allow it. Cuts land on the first page of a chapter. If no combination of chapter breaks fits your page limit, the tool tells you instead of guessing; you can then raise the limit or tick the option that allows a cut inside a chapter.
How are the parts kept equal?
Every possible set of chapter breaks is tested and the one that keeps the parts closest in size, with none over your limit, is chosen. A 1,500-page book usually comes out as three parts of about 500 pages rather than 550, 550 and 400.
Can the table of contents be repeated in every part?
Yes. Pages that look like a contents list, many lines ending in a page number, are found automatically and listed. Keep Repeat the contents pages ticked and they are placed at the front of every part, so each volume can be used on its own. You can correct the page numbers by hand.
What is the cover page?
An optional first page in each part showing Part 2 of 4, the original page range and the chapters inside. It makes the volumes easy to identify on the binding table and for the customer afterwards.
Are the pages changed in any way?
No. The pages are copied exactly as they are, so text stays selectable and the quality is untouched. The only additions are the optional cover page, the repeated contents pages and, if you tick it, a small Part 2 of 4 line at the bottom.
What page limit should I use?
We bind up to 275 sheets, which is 550 pages printed front and back, and about 500 pages is comfortable to use. Set whatever your binder takes; the default is a 550-page limit aiming at 500.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The PDF is read and split inside your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to our server or anyone else's.
Can I split a scanned PDF?
Yes, but a scan has no text, so no chapters are found automatically. Type the split points by unticking or use a page limit; or run the file through our free OCR first to add a text layer.
