2, 4, 6 or 9 pages per sheet – which one should you pick?
How big an ordinary A4 page comes out on an A4 sheet with the default 1 cm margin and 4 mm gap. Body text set at 11 pt shrinks in the same proportion.
| Per sheet | Sheet and grid | Page size | 11 pt text prints at | Paper saved | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Landscape, 2 × 1 | 64% | about 7 pt | 50% | Reading copies, books, notes you will study from |
| 3 | Landscape, 3 × 1 | 43% | about 4.7 pt | 67% | Slides with room to write beside them |
| 4 | Portrait, 2 × 2 | 44% | about 4.9 pt | 75% | Revision notes, question banks, drafts |
| 6 | Landscape, 3 × 2 | 31% | about 3.4 pt | 83% | PowerPoint handouts, lecture slides |
| 9 | Portrait, 3 × 3 | 29% | about 3.2 pt | 89% | Big-heading slides, contact sheets, archive copies |
| 16 | Portrait, 4 × 4 | 21% | about 2.3 pt | 94% | Overview of a whole document, page thumbnails |
Figures are for A4 portrait pages. Slides and landscape pages get a different best grid; the tool works it out for your files and shows the exact size in the summary under the preview.
Built for printing and binding, not just shrinking
- Nothing is ever cutEach page is scaled to fit its box whole, keeping its shape. No cropping, no stretching.
- 1 cm binding marginKept clear on all four sides by default. Change it, add a gutter or mirror it for double-sided.
- Across or downPlace pages left-to-right then down, or top-to-bottom then across.

Why not just use the printer’s “pages per sheet” setting?
Most print dialogs can do 2 or 4 up. The trouble starts when you need a binding margin, several files, numbers, or a file you can send to a print shop.

Quick answers
How do I print 4 pages on one sheet from a PDF?
Add the PDF to the tool above, choose 4, check the preview and press Create PDF. Print the new PDF normally at 100% scale.
How do I print 2 pages per sheet without cutting anything off?
Choose 2 per sheet. Each page is shrunk to fit its half of the sheet whole, with a 1 cm margin kept clear all round.
How do I print PowerPoint slides 6 per page?
Save the presentation as a PDF, add it here and pick 6. Choose continuous small-page numbers to number each slide.
Can I put pages from different PDFs on the same sheet?
Yes. Keep “Continue on the same sheet”. Choose “Start each file on a new sheet” to keep files apart instead.
What is N-up printing?
N-up means printing N pages on one side of paper: 2-up, 4-up, 6-up and so on. It is also called pages per sheet or multiple pages per page.
Should I print the new PDF with “fit to page”?
Print at actual size (100%). The layout already fits the sheet, and the 1 cm margin is inside every printer’s printable area.
Frequently asked questions about printing several pages per sheet
What does N-up or pages per sheet mean?
N-up means printing N pages on one side of a sheet of paper, for example 2-up, 4-up, 6-up or 9-up. This tool makes a new PDF where every sheet already holds that many pages, so you can print it like any normal PDF.
Will any part of my page be cut off?
No. Each page is scaled down to fit its box whole, keeping its original shape, so nothing is cropped or stretched. A 1 cm margin is kept clear on all four sides, and page and sheet numbers sit inside that line, never on top of a page.
Why is there a 1 cm margin on every side?
So the sheet can be spiral, perfect or hard bound without the binding eating into any page, and so every printer can print right to the edge of the layout. You can change it from 0 to 3 cm, add an extra binding gutter, and mirror that gutter on back sides for double-sided printing.
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical order?
Horizontal places pages left to right and then down the sheet: 1 and 2 on top, 3 and 4 below. Vertical fills a column first, top to bottom, then moves across: 1 and 2 on the left, 3 and 4 on the right.
Can I combine many PDF files in one go?
Yes. Add as many PDFs as you like, or a whole folder. Choose Continue on the same sheet to fill every space, or Start each file on a new sheet to keep files apart. For double-sided printing you can also make every file start on a front side; a blank back is added where needed.
What page numbering options are there?
You can number each sheet (1, Page 1, Page 1 of 20, 1 / 20 or - 1 -) at the top or bottom, left, centre, right or outer corner, choose the size and the first number. You can also print a small number under every page, either continuous across all files or the original page number of each file.
How does the index page work?
Tick Add an index page and a contents page is placed at the front, listing every file with its page count and the sheet (or page) number where it starts. Each line is a clickable link in the PDF, entries can be renamed, and PDF bookmarks are added for each file.
Which is better, 4 or 6 pages per sheet?
For text you will read, 2 or 4 per sheet is easier on the eyes: an ordinary A4 page prints at about 64% or 44% of its size. 6 or 9 per sheet suits PowerPoint slides and big headings. The summary under the preview shows the exact size for your own files.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The tool runs on JavaScript inside your browser and reads the files from your own device. Nothing is sent to our server or anyone else's, so it is safe for confidential papers and it keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
Does it work with mixed page sizes and landscape pages?
Yes. Every page fits its own box, so A4, Letter, slides and scanned pages can sit on one sheet. A landscape page is turned sideways when that makes it bigger, which you can switch off. The best sheet orientation is chosen automatically unless you pick one.
Can I use it on a mobile phone?
Yes. It opens in Chrome, Safari or Samsung Internet on Android and iPhone. Very large jobs of hundreds of pages run faster on a laptop or desktop.
What about password-protected PDFs?
A PDF that needs a password to open must be unlocked first: open it with the password and save a copy. A PDF that opens freely but is locked against editing is still accepted; its pages are placed as high-resolution images.
Is the text still sharp when printed small?
Yes. Pages are placed into the new PDF as vector pages, not screenshots, so text stays crisp. Printed on a 600 DPI laser press, even 4 or 6 per sheet reads cleanly; the limit is only how small you are comfortable reading.
Can you print and bind the PDF for me?
Yes. BulkPrintouts.com is a printing press in Borivali West, Mumbai. Send the PDF on WhatsApp to +91 98201 69619 for a quote; black and white starts at ₹0.50 per side and we courier across India.
