1 Add your PDFs and put them in order
Sorting is natural, so Chapter 2 comes before Chapter 10. Rename a chapter title with the Rename button — it changes the heading page and the index entry, never your file.

Nothing is ever cropped. A page bigger than the sheet is scaled down to fit; a page smaller than the sheet is left at its own size and centred.

How do you merge PDFs with an automatic table of contents?
Add your PDF files above — one file per chapter — or choose a folder and every PDF inside it and its subfolders is picked up in natural order. Index, table of contents, TOC, contents page — all the same thing
People call it different names depending on where they studied, so to be clear: the list of chapters with page numbers at the front of a book is called an index in most of India, a table of contents or TOC in most of the rest of the world, and sometimes just the contents page. This tool builds that page for you, whichever name you use for it.
What gets built automatically
A numbered list of every chapter with the page it starts on, laid out across as many index pages as it needs, with long titles wrapped properly instead of running off the edge.
Where the page numbers come from
They are counted from the finished book itself, after blank pages and heading pages have been placed — not estimated. What the preview shows is what the printed page says.
Clickable on screen, correct on paper
Each index line is a live link in the PDF and each chapter appears in the reader's bookmark sidebar, while the printed copy carries the same numbers in ink.
Chapter titles come from file names
The .pdf is stripped off automatically. Rename any chapter in the list before generating, and the heading page and the index both follow.
Point it at a folder and the whole book assembles itself
This is the part that saves an afternoon. If your chapters are already sitting in a folder — one PDF per chapter, perhaps split across subfolders by unit or subject — you do not need to select them one at a time.

Natural order, not ASCII order
Chapter 2 lands before Chapter 10, the way a human would sort it, instead of the way a computer usually does.
Folder path kept visible
Each entry shows where it came from, so two files called notes.pdf in different folders never get mixed up.

Dropping a folder onto the box works too, and reads the same tree.
A note on browsers. Folder selection works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and other Chromium browsers on desktop, and in Safari on macOS. Firefox and phone browsers may only offer the multi-file picker — you can still select hundreds of files at once, and everything else is identical.

Smart PDF Merge — questions people ask
My book is over 500 pages. Should I split it?
Yes, and the tool offers to do it for you. Above about 550 pages it suggests a number of parts — 1,800 pages becomes 4 parts of roughly 450 pages, not 3 parts of 500 and a thin fourth one. Each cut falls where a chapter ends, never inside one, so the parts come out close in size. You can also choose the number of parts yourself, or a fixed number of PDFs per part. Every part gets its own front page, index, page numbers and bookmarks, and the files download one after the other as Part 1, Part 2 and so on.
Why split: a 500-page book is about the most that binds neatly and stays easy to carry and to photocopy, and if one volume is damaged you only reprint that part.
How do I save paper on a big merge?
Tick Save paper in the book settings. It leaves out the chapter title pages and the blank pages that are added so chapters start on the right. On a 10-chapter book that alone saves about 25 pages, and the index, page numbers and bookmarks still work exactly as before.
How do I merge PDFs and add a table of contents automatically?

Is the index the same thing as a table of contents?
For this purpose, yes. What is called an index in India is usually called a table of contents or TOC elsewhere — the list of chapters with the page each one starts on. That is what this tool builds. A back-of-book index of keywords is a different thing and is not generated here.
Can it read a whole folder of PDFs at once?
Yes. Choose a folder and every PDF inside it and inside all of its subfolders is added as a chapter, in natural order, so Chapter 2 comes before Chapter 10. You can also drag a folder onto the box.
Are the page numbers in the index accurate?
They are counted from the finished book, after blank pages, heading pages and index pages have all been placed — so they are exact rather than estimated. The preview on the right runs the same layout engine as the final PDF, which is why the two always agree.
Are the index entries clickable?
Yes, if you leave the clickable index option ticked. Each line in the table of contents becomes a link that jumps to that chapter, and every chapter is also added to the PDF bookmark sidebar that readers like Acrobat, Preview and Chrome show down the left-hand side.
What happens to landscape pages?
By default a landscape page is rotated ninety degrees so it sits on the upright sheet at full size, which is how an atlas or a spreadsheet appendix is normally bound. You can instead keep it upright and shrink it to fit, or keep every page at its original size and shape. Whichever you choose, nothing is cropped — pages larger than the sheet are always scaled down to fit.
Why does the tool add blank pages?
So the book prints properly front-and-back. A chapter heading should fall on a right-hand page, and nothing should be printed on the back of it, so a blank page is inserted where needed. Turn off "Chapters start on the right" if you are printing single-sided and want no blanks.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser using JavaScript, in a background thread so the tab stays responsive. Your PDFs are read on your own device and never transmitted, which is why the tool also works with the internet disconnected once the page has loaded.
Is it free, and is there a limit on file size or number of chapters?
It is completely free with no signup and no limit we impose. The practical limit is your device's memory, since the whole book is assembled in it — a few hundred megabytes of PDFs is comfortable on a normal computer. Very large scanned books are better split into two volumes.
Can it merge password-protected PDFs?
A file that only restricts editing or printing is usually merged without trouble. A file that needs a password just to open cannot be read, and is skipped with a message — remove the open password in your PDF reader first, then add it again.
Does the text stay searchable and sharp?
Yes. Pages are copied as they are, so text stays text and vector diagrams stay vector. Nothing is converted into a picture, so the file stays searchable and prints at full sharpness.
Can I use it for commercial or client work?
Yes. There is no licence to buy and no restriction on commercial use. Because nothing leaves the device, it also suits documents that may not be uploaded to an online converter.
