Clear PDF page numbers and remove hidden data

It is always irritating to choose page numbers while printing a PDF when the numbers you see don’t match the real pages – you type “pages 1 to 50” and the cover and contents come out instead. Here you can remove that confusion in one click. After cleaning, page 1 is the first sheet of the file, every time.

Does your PDF viewer show Cover, i, ii, iii before page 1? Then the page numbers you see do not match the real page count, and anything you type – a page range to print, a place to split – comes out wrong. Drop the PDF here: its own page numbering is cleared so every viewer counts 1, 2, 3 from the first sheet, and the metadata and other data that never prints is removed. The pages themselves are not changed.

Clear page numbers and remove hidden data

    What to remove

Always kept: every page exactly as it looks – text, images, fonts, page sizes and margins, highlights, stamps and drawings on the page, and filled-in form fields. Always removed: leftover data from earlier edits that nothing uses any more.

Done – your clean PDFs are downloading

Next: split the clean PDF for binding, count the pages, or send it to us on WhatsApp for printing.

In short: many PDFs number their own pages – Cover, i, ii, iii, and only then 1, 2, 3 – so the number in your PDF viewer is not the real sheet number. This free tool removes that numbering so every viewer counts 1, 2, 3 from the first sheet, and removes metadata (title, author, software, dates), attachments, scripts, links, sticky notes, tags, thumbnails and leftover data that never prints. The pages are not changed. Many files at once, nothing uploaded.

Why the page numbers do not match

      Seven sheets of a PDF. Before: the viewer shows Cover, i, ii, iii, 1, 2, 3. After clearing: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Before After Cover i ii iii 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 “Page 1” in your viewer is really sheet 5
Before: the viewer shows the publisher’s numbering. After: it counts every sheet, like a printer does.

Printers, page counters, price calculators and our binding splitter all count every sheet from the first one. Your PDF viewer instead shows the numbering the publisher stored in the file. Ask to print “pages 1 to 50” and you may get the cover and front pages instead. Clear the page numbers once and both counts are the same.

      Frequently asked questions

Why does my PDF show Cover, i, ii before page 1?

Many PDFs carry their own page numbering, called page labels. The publisher numbers the cover and the front pages separately (Cover, i, ii, iii) and starts 1 at the first chapter. Your PDF viewer shows those labels, so page 1 in the viewer may really be the 9th sheet in the file. Printers, page counters and splitters count every sheet from the first one, which is why the numbers do not match.

What does Clear page numbers do?

It removes the PDF's own page numbering, so every viewer counts 1, 2, 3 from the very first sheet. Then the number you see in your PDF viewer is the same number our splitter, our page counter and our print shop use. Numbers printed on the pages themselves are not touched.

      Which metadata is removed?

The document information (title, author, subject, keywords, the software that made the file, the created and last-changed dates and any custom fields), the XMP metadata block, and metadata hidden inside images and pages, such as camera or editing-software details. The tool lists what it found in each file before you clean it.

Will the pages look or print any different?

No. The page content is not touched: text, images, fonts, sizes and margins stay exactly as they are, and nothing is re-compressed. Only things that never print are removed, such as links, sticky notes, attachments, scripts and hidden data. Highlights, stamps and drawings you can see on the page are kept.

Why is the cleaned file smaller?

Many PDFs keep old data from earlier edits, page thumbnails, accessibility tags, attachments and duplicated metadata. None of it prints. Removing it often makes the file noticeably smaller, so it uploads and sends on WhatsApp faster.

      Should I remove bookmarks?

Keep them if you will split the book for binding: our binding splitter uses the bookmarks to find the chapters. Tick Remove bookmarks only if you want the plainest possible file.

      Is my file uploaded?

No. The PDF is read and cleaned inside your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to our server or anyone else's.

      Can I clean a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. Open it with the password, save an unlocked copy, and clean that copy.

Can I clean many PDFs at once?

Yes. Drop as many PDFs as you like; each one is cleaned and they download together in one ZIP. There is no daily limit, no file-count limit and no size cap set by us; only your device's memory (RAM) decides how big a job can be.
