The difference
Why this one has no limits, and no upload
It is not generosity. It is a different design.
Almost every other PDF numbering site copies your file to a machine in a data centre, stamps it there and sends it back. That costs the operator bandwidth and processing on every single job, so limits are how they stay solvent — a cap on pages, a cap on megabytes, a few free jobs a day, or a subscription button.
This page does the work in your browser instead. Your PDF is read straight from disk into this tab's memory, the numbers are drawn there, and the finished file is handed back to your downloads folder. Nothing crosses the network. That is why a 2,000-page manual is no harder than a 4-page assignment, and why there is no premium plan behind any of the options.
It also means the tool is safe for material you would not hand to a stranger's server: legal bundles, medical files, tender documents, question papers, salary records. There is no retention policy to read, because there is no copy to retain. Open your browser's developer tools, watch the Network tab while you number a file, and you will see nothing leave your machine.

Top or bottom, left, centre or right. Bottom centre is the safe default for assignments; the outer bottom corner is the convention for books.
Switch it on and the number moves to the outer edge automatically — right on odd pages, left on even — so it never disappears into the spine of a bound book.
Set the first page to number. Pages before it are left completely clean, which is what a title page and a contents page need.
Numbering chapter two of a thesis that ended at page 48? Start at 49 and the sequence continues correctly across separate files.
Number a preface as i, ii, iii and the body as 1, 2, 3 by running the tool twice. Very few free tools offer Roman numerals at all.
Scanned pages that sit sideways, and files that mix portrait with landscape or A4 with A3, get their number in the right visual corner rather than off the edge.

How to number a book, thesis or report properly
We print books every day and we see the same three mistakes arrive in customers' files. Here is the convention that binders and universities expect.
1. Leave the cover unnumbered
The title page never carries a number. Set first page to number to the page after your title page, and everything before it stays clean.
2. Front matter gets Roman numerals
Preface, acknowledgements, contents and list of figures are numbered i, ii, iii. Run the tool once over that range with the Roman style, then again over the body starting at 1.
3. Numbers go on the outer edge
In a bound book the number sits away from the spine: right on odd pages, left on even. Switch on mirror for double-sided binding and pick a bottom corner.
4. Leave room for the binding
Spiral punching eats about 12 mm of the inner edge and trimming takes 3 mm off the outer. A 28 pt margin is a safe minimum; go to 36 pt for perfect binding.

How do I add page numbers to a PDF for free?

Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is read into this browser tab and the numbers are drawn there. No copy is sent to BulkPrintouts or anyone else, so the tool is safe for confidential documents. You can confirm it in your browser's Network tab while the job runs.
Can I skip the cover page or the contents page?
Yes. Set first page to number to the page where numbering should begin. Every page before it is left untouched. Set start counting at separately if that page should still be called 1.
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Put any value in start counting at. This is how you continue a sequence across several files — if chapter one ended at 48, start chapter two at 49.
Can it add Roman numerals?
Yes, in both lower case (i, ii, iii) and upper case (I, II, III). Number your front matter in Roman first, then run the tool again over the body pages starting at 1. Most free numbering tools do not offer this at all.
Can the number move to the outer edge for a bound book?
Yes. Switch on mirror for double-sided binding and choose a left or right position. Odd pages get the number on the right, even pages on the left, so it never falls into the spine.
What happens with landscape or rotated pages?
They are handled correctly. The tool reads each page's own size and rotation and places the number in the right visual corner, the right way up. Scanned files that mix sideways pages with upright ones come out consistent.
Is there a limit on pages or file size?
No. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no upload limit to hit. A 2,000-page manual works the same as a 4-page assignment. The only ceiling is your device's memory.
Will it change the quality of my pages?
No. Existing text and images are left exactly as they are — the tool only draws a small text object on top. Text stays selectable and searchable, and images keep their resolution.
Can I remove the numbers afterwards?
Not from the numbered copy, so keep your original file. The download is a new PDF; your source file is never modified.
Can I number a password-protected PDF?
A file with owner restrictions but no open password will usually work. A PDF that asks for a password before it will open must be unlocked first in the app you normally read it with.
What if I need to merge several files first?
